HFM BOCES Special Education has a full-time, 12-month opening for a Senior Typist to begin work on 6/29/2026.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
The work involves the responsibility for independently performing complex clerical operations and administrative support tasks. Incumbents spend a substantial amount of time operating a personal computer and the rest of the time on routine administrative tasks to ensure the efficient workflow of the office. The work also involves responsibility for the entry and retrieval of information using software on a computer and using a computer to produce printed material such as letters, memoranda and forms. Incumbents work under general supervision, receiving detailed instructions only where policies have not been determined. This class differs from that of Typist by the increased time spent on operating software and the more limited scope of duties and decision-making responsibilities. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative but not exhaustive):
- Establishes and implements office procedures and maintains an efficient work flow;
- Prepares correspondence, documents, records and other written material;
- Maintains and updates database/spreadsheet records on a personal computer;
- Reviews accounts, reports and other documents for completeness, accuracy and conformity with established procedures;
- Screens callers or visitors to determine the nature of the inquiry and refers to the appropriate party or office and answers inquiries as appropriate;
- Collects employment applications and coordinates interviews;
- Prepares and maintains student and staff attendance;
- Tracks and managers staff evaluations;
- Coordinates with school districts for students required documentation related to their individual education program;
- Establishes and maintains confidential and general office files;
Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the last filing date: graduation from high school, high school equivalency diploma or a high school Individual Education Plan Diploma and either:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's degree in secretarial science or a closely related field which must have included a course in typing, keyboarding or word processing; or
B. Two years of clerical experience which shall have involved typing; or
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above
All experience required to meet the minimum qualification section is PAID.
EXAM Requirement:
This is a civil service position: appointed applicant. The Senior Typist title is currently part of the NYHELPS program until 6/30/2026 and an exam is not required. If NYHELPS doesn't get extended and an individual gets appointed after 7/1/2026, they may be required to take the Senior Typist civil service exam when offered and be reachable on the civil service list once it is established in order to maintain the appointment.
RESIDENCY Requirement:
You must be a resident of Hamilton, Fulton or Montgomery County in order to be considered for this position.
