Job Description

HFM BOCES is seeking School Bus Attendants. This is a 10-month position with possible hourly work over the summer. HFM BOCES offers a shared service to provide transportation for students enrolled in the Gloversville Enlarged School District and the Greater Johnstown School District.

A school bus attendant rides on a school bus for the purpose of assisting the driver in maintaining order and seeing to the needs of handicapped student passengers. This is routine work of ordinary difficulty involving responsibility for overseeing the loading and unloading of student passengers and for administering to their needs, comfort and conduct while in transit on regularly scheduled bus trips to and from school. Supervision is exercised over the conduct of student passengers as required. Does related work as required. 

Successful candidates are eligible to take advantage of HFM BOCES health insurance coverage and the New York State retirement system once they have successfully completed the initial training period.

*Applicants who have retired from the New York State Employees' Retirement System (ERS) or Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) may qualify for a higher hourly pay rate.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative but not exhaustive): 

  • Rides on a school bus for the purpose of assisting pupils to climb aboard and alight from bus; Assists parents in helping handicapped children board and alight from bus including securing wheelchairs on school bus; 
  • Seats and places student passengers as required; 
  • May operate a lift to load and unload handicapped student passengers and secures restraint devices and wheel chair locks; 
  • Maintains order on bus and makes certain that student passengers are seated while bus is in motion; 
  • Informs students about safety practices; 
  • Assists students and driver as needed. 
  • May help young pupils to cross the street in safety; 
  • May maintain daily log of problems encountered and actions taken.

Fulton County Civil Service

This is a Civil Service position. Applicants must be a resident of Hamilton, Fulton or Montgomery County in order to be considered for this position. 

TEACH Clearance

Per Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
